Description
Handmade tile decorated with a lily subject. the Giglio is the historical symbol of the city of Florence; there are different versions related to its origin. The best known and perhaps most realistic story traces the origin of the symbol of the lily of Florence to the presence of a flower that grows spontaneously on the hills around Florence, commonly called "giaggiolo"; a light purple wild iris. The lily would be a stylized version of the flower itself. The lily of Florence has changed color several times during its history, based on the political faction that governed the city at that time, Guelphs or Ghibellines; the lily changed from white on a red background, to how we currently see it, a red lily on a white background.
